Always Personal…

Monday morning, January 15th, I took a risky drive to my Plano office on icy roads. I was determined to meet with my back to back appointments. I was talking on my hands free ear piece to my good friend. I thought it was smooth sailing. I passed on the left hand side, and then it happened. Oh my God, oh my God, oh my-CRASH!!!

I can't believe it! I just paid off my truck in November, and now I crashed into the concrete median at 50 MPH. I spun around after bouncing off the median and some how guided the truck to the other side of the road without crashing into other vehicles. Someone stopped to check on me and make sure I was o.k. . Both front doors were jammed shut. I crawled out of the back door and used my cell phone to call my wife to come and get me. I was battered, a little bruised, but ultimately BALANCED!

What happens when life throws us into a tail spin and we feel battered and bruised? How do we keep our balance?

1. Focus on what is MOST important.

I enjoyed my F150, red, 166,000 mile, paid off truck. However things can be replaced! People are most important! I'm thankful that no one else was hurt in the crash. I only suffered some minor whip lash. A fresh appreciation for life will help any of us to be more balanced!

2. Let people HELP.

It was awesome that two heroes stopped and took the time to make sure I was safe. It was awesome that my wife took time out of her schedule to risk driving on the ice to come pick me up! She drove me on to Plano where I saw my clients, and she piddled in Plano for the day. Thanks for my automobile insurance company and the wonderful customer service they gave in my crisis. My dad was also a tremendous help over the next two weeks helping me locate my new truck. When we are battered and bruised people help us find balance!

3. TRUST that life will work out.

My truck was assessed by the insurance company and was declared totaled because the frame was irreparable. One area of my life that was out of balance was an inflated credit card. When the insurance company blessed me with a larger check than I expected, I was able to pay off a major portion of the high interest credit card and have enough  money to purchase my new pre-owned Honda Ridgeline truck. Trust that life will work out for your good and remember it could be worse!

When the black ice of life threatens your balance, throws you into a tail spin, and leaves you battered, bruised, and bent out of shape, focus on what is most important, let people help, and trust that life will work out. You may be battered, bruised, and bent, but you can be balanced!

Always Professional…

Professionals need to know how to deal with people!

Dealing with people takes emotional intelligence, personality perception, and diversity awareness. One aspect of diversity is generational influence. The generation we grow up in creates a mindset. It's important to understand generational differences to effectively work with customers, co-workers, and the community. The common generations are: The Matures (born prior to 1945), The Baby Boomers (born 1946-1964), The Generation X (born 1965-1980), The Millennials (born 1981-1999). I will highlight some major mindsets of each generation in the next four issues. We will start with the Millennials and go backwards.

Millennials were born 1981-1999. They are sometimes called, "Generation Y (why) and the Internet Generation." Millennials have been socialized to live in the moment and expect the immediacy of technology. They tend to demonstrate respect only after they feel respect. This generation is extremely diverse and has grown up questioning the world around them. Money is pursued with the mentality of spending now. They need clear expectations to encourage productivity.

The basic themes of the Millennials are: Work should be fun; life is on my terms; this is only a job; earn to spend; right and wrong depends on the situation; and technology has all of the answers.

Tips to deal with Millennials:

1. Learn more about technology and encourage them to lead with technology.

2. Give them respect, freedom, and fun with clear expectations toward the future.

3. Utilize their diversity, questioning minds, and help them learn team work.

Forever Playful…

Email is one major way most of us stay connected in the business world!

Recently, I was emailing a business associate about participating in an upcoming telephone conference. We decided on 9 AM Eastern time which translated to 8 AM Central time for me. Reluctantly, I  agreed on the early time on one condition-if my associate would provide me coffee! She sent me the following email reply.

Thanks! Here is your coffee...

After giggling, I emailed her back, saying I like cream with my coffee! She sent me the following reply.

Here you go, you'll have to make your own..

Now I was slapping my leg and laughing out loud! I sent her my final reply.

"Mooooooo... You got me! Thanks for the laugh and playful break in the middle of the day!"

Find creative ways to add fun, laughter, and playfulness in your emails. It will add balance to your day!
